Chronic Ruptured Calcaneal Tendon in a 6-month old Labrador Retriever
Acute, traumatic, ruptures of the calcaneal tendon can affect any dog and are generally easily corrected with reconstructive surgery. Understanding the pathogenesis of the injury is essential for the proper care of afflicted animals. Prognosis and treatment options are most heavily dependent on the time between injury and presentation, however. This case involved a 6 month old Labrador Retriever that presented on referral for a left common calcaneal tendon rupture. The patient had an initial orthopedic examination in addition to diagnostic imaging which revealed a full thickness rupture of the gastrocnemius distally- most likely involving musculotendinous junction - as well as a significant partial rupture of the superficial digital flexor tendon. These two injuries were corrected surgically and were grafted with swine pericardium in order to maximize both apposition and stabilization of the surgical site.
