An eleven-year-old spayed female greyhound dog was presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service as a referral for dental disease. On general physical examination, the patient was apparently healthy, but the oral examination revealed extensive periodontal disease, stomatitis, and a fractured right maxillary canine tooth. Complete dental charting and intraoral radiographs revealed that full-mouth dental extraction was indicated. This report describes the management of this case, including a discussion of periodontal disease and the importance of a systematic oral examination, with an emphasis on indications for surgical extraction.
