IMPACTS OF URBAN GREENING PROJECTS ON SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES IN MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES IN CHINA
In policies, urban greening is a win-win project that improves the living environment and prepares the city to reach decarbonization goals. In reality, what will the new green space bring to the surrounding community? This study considers these questions in the context of second-tier cities in China, specifically in two parks built in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Through various data sources such as street view images, news reports, and property transaction data, I use mixed methods to study the impact of the parks on the surrounding areas. The results show that parks had differing levels of impact on their surrounding physical environments and housing prices. The type of park and differing levels of government attention contribute to these differences in outcomes. This study helps bridge the gap of insufficient research on green space in medium-sized Chinese cities and provides a reference for subsequent urban planning strategies in Kunming City.
