Pneumonia in a 5yr old Bearded Collie after a 3-day stay at a boarding facility
A five-year-old male castrated Bearded Collie presented for a ten-day history of coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy and weight loss following a three-day stay at a boarding facility. Other dogs that had also been at this facility were reported to have similar clinical signs. On presentation, the patient was depressed, with a wet, productive cough that was intermittently dry with a terminal retch. Bilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge and increased respiratory effort were evident. Thoracic radiographs revealed soft tissue opacity in the ventral lung field with air bronchograms, consistent with a bronchopneumonia. Treatment was initiated with nasal insufflation of oxygen along with broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics. Mechanical ventilation was instituted due to failure to respond to oxygen supplementation and increasing concern of respiratory failure. After four days of ventilation therapy the patient was euthanized. No postmortem was pursued. This case report will focus on the use of mechanical ventilation in patients with primary lung disease.
