The 1959 Census counted about 82,000 farms in New York State. Of these, about 57,000 were classified by type. A farm was classified as a particular type if the sales of one product or group of products amounted to 50 percent or more of the total value of all farm products sold during the year. A summary of the classification is indicated in the table below. The location of the farms of each type is indicated on the accompanying maps. The Census divided the farms of each type, according to the value of farm products sold. This division was reported for the state, but not by counties. Most of the potato farms had farm product sales of over $10,000. A relatively small proportion of the general, cash grain and cattle-hog-sheep farms had sales of $10,000.
