Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the spatial distribution of surface temperatures in Portland, OR, using remote sensing data from Landsat 8. By identifying the thermal variations among different land use/land cover classes, the impacts of each land cover class on thermal anomalies can be better understood. Furthermore, by spatially and statistically analyzing temperatures with socio-demographic data, populations with the highest vulnerability to heat-related risks are identified. The results show that land surface temperature is the highest in areas of built-up land and croplands in the Portland Metro Area, and lowest in areas with forest cover. Statistical analysis suggest that heat exposure occurs disproportionately across populations depending on their socio-demographic status.
