Abstract

A two-month-old Ayrshire heifer calf was presented to Cornell’s Equine and Nemo Farm Animal Hospital on emergency early in the morning of August 12, 2017 for bilateral abdominal distention, decreased manure production, anorexia, and depressed attitude. She was bottle fed milk until five days prior to presentation, when she was weaned to pail feeding. The calf had been healthy until three days prior to presentation, when her owners noted bilateral abdominal distention, complete absence of manure production, and increasing depression. On the day prior to presentation, the patient went off feed and had continued abdominal distention. The owners were concerned that the patient may have ingested a metal snap from her milk pail, which they had noted to have gone missing around the same time as the onset of the patient’s clinical signs.
