Abstract

Memorial Statement for Professor Alan Dobson, Ph.D. (1928-2017) who joined the College faculty in the Department of Physiology in 1964. He was at the forefront of using computer technology for analyzing physiological signals. In studying how sheep and cattle absorb nutrients, he became interested in the regulation of blood flow. With Cor Drost, he invented an ultrasonic flow meter which lead to the establishment of an international company, Transonic Systems, Inc., for using ultrasonic technology for medical and scientific purposes. He remained actively connected to the company in his retirement in 1995. In 1982 Alan was awarded the distinction of a Doctor of Science degree by his alma mater, Cambridge University, and in 1990 his research was recognized by his being made a Quatercentenary Research Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
