Abstract

This paper describes a two-day-old calf born with atresia coli, as well as the diagnostic workup, treatment plan, and complications of the case. It will also discuss potential risk factors for the development of atresia coli in calves. The calf was fed four liters of colostrum, following which exhibited inappetence and a mildly distended abdomen. On presentation, the patient also had a low serum total protein, indicative of failure of passive transfer. Atresia coli was suspected and subsequently confirmed during an exploratory laparotomy. End-to-side colectomy and resection and anastomosis were performed, and the patient recovered well from surgery. Aggressive postoperative care included pain control, antibiotics, gradual re-feeding, and plasma transfusions. The calf was discharged five days postoperatively. Atresia coli is a congenital disorder, the etiology of which is debated. Options for correction are limited and costly, and the prognosis is guarded to poor.
