Are the Mysterious Seneca Drums an Unaccounted-for Natural Source of Geologically Formed Methane and Chloride to Seneca Lake?
The “Seneca Drums” acoustic phenomenon and an unexplained annual chloride (Cl-) influx to Seneca Lake have prompted investigation of recently identified lakebed pockmarks as potential sources. We sampled 14 pockmarks and two control sites (September 2025) for dissolved CH4, Cl-, and physicochemical parameters. Neither CH4 (0.047–0.102 nmol mL-1) nor Cl- (124– 143 mg L-1) concentrations were elevated within pockmarks relative to controls, and CH4 variability was more strongly associated with dissolved oxygen and turbidity than location. These results suggest no active venting during sampling, though episodic emissions or dilution effects cannot be ruled out. Continued investigation using continuous monitoring, isotopic tracers, and expanded spatial sampling is needed to assess whether pockmarks contribute to the lake’s biogeochemical and acoustic dynamics.
