Ovarian Neoplasia in Laying Hens
An 86 week old, white leghorn hen was presented to the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center for necropsy, as part of a group of mortalities from a commercial laying flock. The farm had been experiencing approximately 10 -15 laying hen deaths over a three day period. This hen was euthanized via cervical dislocation prior to presentation due to unthriftiness. The necropsy report stated that the intestines, mesentery, liver, kidneys, and gallbladder were covered by "hundreds of2-4 mm diameter, discrete to coalescing, pale tan to white, firm, round nodules". The ovary was completely effaced by similar nodules. The histopathology repo1i described "nodules of a poorly demarcated, moderately cellular, unencapsulated, neoplasm". The final diagnosis based on gross and histological evaluation was ovarian adenocarcinoma with carcinomatosis.
