Saw Mill River: Inventory and Recommendations
In partnership with the Hudson River Estuary Program (HREP) and Groundwork Hudson Valley (GHV), the Cornell University student team has investigated a number of issues identified by HREP and GHV staff as well as local governments, residents and civic groups along the Saw Mill River, and through in-class research. These issues include better public access to the river, increasing the visibility and public profile of the river, litter and trash along and in the river, riverine flooding, water quality and invasive plant species. The student team conducted a reconnaissance of the 6.6 miles of the Saw Mill River from Ashford Avenue in Ardsley downstream to New School Street in downtown Yonkers, and based on their survey identified seven sites along the river that the team then focused on and developed specific plans for each one. This report take is not intended to be a comprehensive plan of action, but rather a starting point for a number of community dialogues on the future of the Saw Mill River the appropriate actions to be taken to rehabilitate and reclaim the river as a public asset. The limited timeframe for producing this report also dictated a more speculative approach on the part of the Cornell team, highlighting the potential of each site and providing conceptual design ideas for consideration by local governments and community members.
