(Re)Thinking Design
This thesis focuses on creating a discourse in architecture that challenges the way we build and proposes new ideas to tackle climate change, and it explores the possibilities and opportunities of building for a more sustainable future through a series of projects developed during the MSAAD program at Cornell University. How can we balance short term human needs with the long term impact on the environment? How can we adapt and respond to this changing world? The work explored here seeks to understand a possible future paradigmchange in the way we build and design, explores mitigation and adaptation strategies for the architecture of climate change and seeks to ignite a conversation about the future of architecture. The projects tackle the climate crisis through different approaches: by reducing the footprint of the project, like Microcosm does, by reusing building materials, like InterSection does, by designing for disassembly, like Floating Shelves does, or by exploring solutions for future scenarios, like Metal Straws does.
