Developing a comprehensive on-farm research (OFR) program takes planning, people, protocols and analysis tools to execute field-level studies and associated reports. In 2017, the Ohio State University Digital Ag team started the eFields program to increase the quantity and quality of farmer-engaged OFR in Ohio. The program established re- search requirements for participation including recommended experimental designs and standardized protocols and data collection methods. Consistency in data collec- tion across trial types was established to enable aggregation to answer broader re- search questions. Since the outset of the effort, the number of trials executed annually has increased 384%, while partner farms and researcher participation has increased 174% and 225%, respectively. The number of Ohio State people involved has increased to 65 with 55 industry partners supporting various studies. However, challenges still exist with developing sound protocols, timely and accurate data collection, and sum- marizing data efficiently for reporting.
