Circular Building Construction and Reading the Rural Landscape
Currently, the systems that drive our contemporary world emit more greenhouse gases than the previous day at every moment [1]. However, the present moment is also a period when we possess the largest amount of embodied energy and carbon in our possessions, in the built environment, and in waste [2]. It is also a time when we expect population growth to plateau, possibly as well as economic growth, following a brief period of continued expansion [3]. Therefore, the coming decades of planning and construction of our built environment will carry tremendous significance in shaping the attitudes and practices of future generations toward a circular economic model [4]. Before the demand for expansive construction dwindles with the plateauing of population and economic growth, this would be an opportune time to promote preparations for re-use and circular economy in the construction industry. It would also signal a time when extractive, hierarchical, and centralized structures cede ground to mutually beneficial, democratic, and decentralized relationships between all stakeholders.
