Esophageal Adenocarcinoma in a Cat
A 12-year-old male, castrated, domestic medium-haired cat presented for a complaint of inappetence and anemia. On presentation, the cat was in respiratory distress and pleural fluid was noted in the chest. Diagnostics, including baseline bloodwork, urinalysis, abdominal ultrasound, thoracic CT, and fine needle aspirate revealed anemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), isosthenuria, and masses in multiple organs. The primary differential was metastatic carcinoma. Necropsy findings and histopathology supported the diagnosis of esophageal adenocarcinoma with multiple sites of metastasis. This report will review the presentation and diagnostic tests performed, and discuss esophageal adenocarcinoma, a previously unreported neoplasia in cats.
