Bilateral Ulnar Osteotomy in a 7-month-old Intact Male Collie
A 7-month-old intact male Collie was presented to the Cornell’s Orthopedic Service for a 5-month history of bilateral angular limb deformity. He was first evaluated by his primary care veterinarian in April when the clients first noticed his forelimbs were not straight. At the time, it was determined the degree of angulation was not worrisome. Over the next 5 months, the angulation has worsened, but the patient has not had any ambulation issues. About 10 days prior to presentation to CUHA, the patient was seen by a dermatologist for a possible food allergy who recommended his forelimbs be assessed.
On presentation to the Cornell’s Orthopedic Service, the patient was bright, alert, and responsive. He had bilateral carpal valgus with a decreased range of motion of the carpal joints and bilateral elbow varus that was painful on palpation. The patient was prepared and placed under general anesthesia for computed tomography (CT) of both forelimbs. CT showed evidence of bilateral elbow incongruity with possible osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions. The following day, the patient had bilateral elbow arthroscopy and bilateral proximal bi-oblique ulnar osteotomy performed.
This report will discuss the surgical approach to correction of a forelimb angular limb deformity, the goals of surgery, and possible sequelae from surgery.
