Abstract

[Excerpt] While the career literature provides considerable understanding of the challenges skilled gig workers encounter, there is comparatively limited insight into how these workers successfully navigate and overcome such obstacles. The existing research on career support has primarily focused on regular employees, leaving a gap in understanding the support required by skilled gig workers (Chudzikowski et al., 2020). Similarly, despite the growing presence of Labour Market Intermediaries (LMIs) in the gig economy (Koene & Pichault, 2021; Lorquet et al., 2018), there remains ambiguity regarding the various types of LMIs and the specific benefits they provide to gig workers in their career progression. Our study seeks to bridge this gap by exploring two crucial questions: How do LMIs assist in the career development of skilled gig workers, and how effective are these support mechanisms?
