Abstract

We define value as the benefit On-Farm Experimentation (OFE) delivers to farmers and others to help them farm better. We explored value in the presentations from the OFE2021 Conference using Osterwalder’s Value Proposition Framework. The activities described in the presentations delivered value mainly to farmers and scientists. Farmers were assisted in achieving a wide range of goals (not just better fertilizer use). Scientists were supported by products deemed useful to OFE. Extension agents were the next beneficiary. While functional jobs, especially fertilizer management, were a prime target for OFE, projects also targeted supporting-jobs that help farmers organize or access the data they need. Few reported explicit personal or social benefits from OFE, although anecdotally, we know these can also be important.
