Since its inception, Cornell University has been committed to free and open dissemination, publication, and distribution of knowledge, information and research results. This commitment is a pillar of Cornell’s commitment to knowledge by accretion and publicly accessible information. These foundational principles have been formally recognized in university policy and faculty resolution since 1948. In alignment with Cornell’s commitment to promote equitable access to resources and to support advances in the broader library and academic community, Cornell University Library provides data openly where possible.

    Warner, Simeon; Kovari, Jason (2025-01-30)
Open sharing and reuse of library bibliographic metadata improves the discoverability and usefulness of library resources. Open metadata also supports scholarship, research and innovation. This primer sketches three steps to sharing your institution’s bibliographic metadata based on our experience with providing open bibliographic metadata at Cornell University Library: 1. Policy, Copyright and Licensing – Develop a policy and select a license 2. Scope – Decide what records or fields should or must be excluded 3. Provide Access – Create the dataset, make it available, and plan updates
