The New York State (NYS) Tick Blitz was a collaborative effort between the Cornell University Department of Entomology: Harrington Lab and the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program, as well as the Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases. A Tick Blitz is a community science opportunity wherein volunteers go outdoors in their local community and record all the ticks they find during a specific period. The goal is to see what types of ticks are present in an area, educate the public on what diseases these ticks can transmit, and provide education, tools, and resources for tick bite prevention. A Tick Blitz program also allows tick collections to be conducted across a large geography in a short period of time. The purpose of this toolkit is to share operational details of the NYS Tick Blitz with others, with the intention to support those who may start a similar program. Examples of learning outcomes, materials and supplies, and evaluation instruments are provided in this guide.
