The rapid growth of the aging population and prevalence of social isolation among older adults require appropriate interventions. Meanwhile the increase in age segregated communities limits the opportunity for youth to interact and learn from older adults. Intergenerational programs (IGPs) can be a solution to the above problems. In this paper, I introduce and examine the effectiveness of a short-term theory-based IGP. Youth and older adults were recruited and assigned to either the treatment or the control condition, and pretest and posttest were administrated to all participants. Youth participants in the treatment condition were trained, and instructed to conduct an interview with older adults and present their findings in a community presentation. General linear regression model with random effect and meta-analysis were used to analyze the data. Youth in the treatment condition improved significantly on attitudes toward older adults and self-regarded purpose, compared to the control group. However, older adults in the treatment condition did not differ significantly compared to the control group on any outcomes examined. Nonetheless, both age groups reported highly positive qualitative feedback about the program. This short-term theory-based IGP partially achieved the anticipated results. Future IGP should be designed based on theories and be examined using both quantitative and qualitative data to support the effectiveness of programs prior to expansion.
