Data overview: This dataset has four types of data: (1) Audio files (.smr) recorded while pairs of mice engaged in social encounters, analyzed in Figures 1-3 of Malone et al.; (2) Video files (.mp4) of those same social interactions, analyzed in Figures 1-3 and Supplemental Figure S4 of Malone et al.; (3) Images of vaginal cytology samples, analyzed in Figures 2-3 and Supplemental Figure S4 of Malone et al.; (4) Csv files (.csv) containing the summary data used to create Figures 1-3 and Figure S4 of Malone et al. Instrument- or software-specific information needed to interpret the data: Audio files: Requires software that can open/access .smr files. Because ultrasonic vocalizations are not audible to humans, we recommend using Spike2 (CED) to visualize and analyze our smr files. Video files: Requires software that can open .mp4 files (such as Windows Media Player (Microsoft) or Quicktime (Apple)). DATA-SPECIFIC INFORMATION: Audio files, video files, and vaginal cytology image files are named as follows: FigureNumber_ExperimentNumber_Date_FemaleID_MaleID_EstrousState FemaleID and MaleID are the identifier numbers for each animal in our study. Due to the nature of the recordings, the audio (.smr; mouse vocalization, no spoken language) and video (files (.mp4, non-vocal social interactions of mice) in this dataset do not contain transcripts.
