AVMA July, 1 9 6 9 2 These words from the Veterinarian’s Oath are especially poignant to you, m em bers o f the Cornell DVM Class of 2002. During your past four years here at the college, the world has changed dramatically. Shared experiences have given civilized nations a mutual, heartfelt sense of the fragility of life; we see anew the interrelatedness of all living beings. As individuals and com m unities, we are called upon to respond with personal resolve, civicmindedness, and the spirit of service to humankind. Opportunities for the profession — and for you as its newest m em bers — are global in reach and potential. Now, m ore than ever before in m odern history, the world recognizes the contributions of veterinary science and m edicine for safeguarding animal and hum an health. The world looks to its veterinary scientists for information and answers to the threats of bioterrorism. For the prevention of contagious diseases on global scales — tuberculosis, AIDS, influenza, foot-and-m outh disease, Ebola, and m ore. For d eeper and faster knowledge from the new life sciences — genom ics, proteom ics, nanobiotechnology. For advances in medicine — im provem ent treatm ent and the ultimate prevention of cancer and other major diseases. For expertise in caring for the herd health of food- and production animals that assure sustainable agriculture and stable econom ies. For a continued focus on the human-animal bond and the significance of com panion animals in our contem porary lifestyles. The potential for veterinarians’ service to society is truly limitless. We stand together to m eet these global needs, renew ed in ou r com m itm ent to the Veterinarian’s Oath. As a college, we stand tall in your accom plishm ents as the Class of 2002; I am personally proud to have served as your dean. As you becom e alumni, we encourage you to em brace the responsibilities of your profession, to respect those who have traveled before you, and, m ost importantly, to support those who will follow in your footsteps. We look to the future and to your leadership, confident in the preparations that have helped you becom e the newest torchbearers of the veterinary profession. We salute you! Donald F. Holland 53 D ia n e D e c k e r Many thanks to everyone who has supported me, believed in me, inspired me, helped me maintain the slight modicum of sanity that I started with over 4 years ago, and of course, went to lots of costume parties and ‘80s nights with me -especially my parents, Kathleen, Karen, Jennifer, Geof, Sean and JC. I am blessed to have known and loved you all. And of course I need to mention my animals, Lola, Bear, Psycho, Stella and Cat, who have touched my heart and taught me lessons about love and loyalty that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else. As one of the oldest members of the class. I’d like to impart some unsolicted advice: It is my humble opinion that everyone should have a hobby, a talent, and i vice. It’s a cool trick to have one thing be all three. But it can’t be veterinary medicine. We’ve worked our tails off for four years, and it’s time we find other things that fulfill us. My own suggestion is ultimate frisbee and tranvestites, but I understand that everyone has to find their own answers. Also, just about everything can be made better by being sparkly, adding chocolate, or listening to ‘80s music while doing it. I refuse to believe that vet med can’t be included in that as well. Best of luck, everyone! 54 M ic h e lle L D e lc o 55 J o s e e D e s b a ra ts P e tra D o y le Congratulations, Class of 2002, we finally made it! I would also like to thank my husband (my HM), Charles. You have given me so much support and unconditional love over these years. It has been hard being away from you for so long, but it will finally be you and me together — like a real married couple. Thanks to my family and my in-laws for all of your love and SUPPORT. Thanks to my friends back home, Vatina, Janet, Angie and Angela and to all the guys back in Maryland. Crack, thank you for being there when I needed you. Thanks also to Dylan, Brian and Tex for dealing with us Texans in the snowy weather and the long drive. Angela you have been with me from the first day of vet school (Thank the Lord). I would have been in tears, that first day, if it had not been for you and I have told you why already. Thanks for being a great housemate and being there "evyday” of vet school. Don’t forget all the correct pronunciations and proper names that I have taught you. To my classmates, I will remember you all and some I will especially miss. Hopefully you know who you are or I haven’t done my job. Congratulations, we did it. Nichole Edwards 61 A n th e a F . E llio t Security is mostly a superstition. I guess it all started with hitting on everyone at the Block I party (whose fluorescent pink sunglasses were those anyway? I think I ended up breaking them, sorry). It progressed to include strong memories of escaping from school to study downtown with Ally in pursuit of a real life, trying to convince every person who might listen that Republica really was a fun place to be, being the sorority sister that never was that summer on Long Island, becoming A-Train, and spaying my little Ratalina. There are integral parts of vet school that I definitely won’t miss like biting my tongue in tutor group but 1am thankful for the wonderful education I received and, most importantly, am thankful that along the way I found my very own veterinary school “Bravado boy” to share my life with, and have made friends that are timeless. Finally catching up with the youth, he asked him why he was doing this. The answer was that the stranded starfish would die if left until the morning sun. “But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” countered the other. “How can your effort make any difference?” The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it to the safety of the waves. “It makes a difference to this one,” he said.” -Anonymous 68 K e v in M . Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” Calvin Coolidge 94 Kristen Klara Reyher Four years speed by. We look back, and we remember — days when dreams came true, acceptance letters and moving boxes, goodbyes and hellos, the changing of a season in our lives. And what a season it has been, filled with headaches and heartaches and much more than the memorization of textbook facts. W e held each other’s days in our hands, we watched one another grow and change and become what we had always longed to become. There were struggles, trials, long hours and deep sorrows, but we held together and forged ahead, and we were all the stronger for it. And there were also joys, accomplishments, celebrations and the memories that will always bind us together as classmates and soulmates. W e fought the battles, we discovered one another, and somewhere along the way, we discovered ourselves. And now com es the next step, but still these three remain: Faith — in ourselves and each other, as we brave this world ahead and use these experiences and educations to better the lives of those we are trained to assist, Hope — in our world and all who inhabit it, that we may make a difference and change for the better those things which make this a safer and more beautiful planet on which all can live, and Love — for mankind and the animals who capture our hearts and help us live fuller, happier lives because of their unconditional acceptance and pure enjoyment of all their days with us. But the greatest of these, is Love. M ay G od bless you, m y classmates and friends, and thank you for sharing your lives and four years with one as unworthy, and yet as amazingly lucky, as me. Congratulations, Danny! You are our hero. All our love and best wishes, Mari, Ed, Brian & Emily 126 When Bruce was in kindergarten he had an assignment to draw a picture of what he wanted to be when he grew up. He drew a picture of different types of animals and said that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He has never wavered from that choice. Bruce has a deep love and respect for animals, and the feeling is mutual. Animals take to him right away whether it be a calf, turkey, snake, or iguana. On occasion an animal might take to Bruce a little too deeply. Unfortuantely, our neighbor's Pit Bull in Arizona took to Bruce deeply — in his leg that is— which resulted in several stitches. Bruce's trademark is the turtle because of a story he heard in high school. The story told how sometimes when a turtle stretched out his neck he would get it shot off. The moral is if you want to get anywhere in life you have to be willing to stick your neck out even though it’s risky. His mother found a picture of this turtle along with this quote, "When racing the elusive hare, the tortoise never lost sight of his goal." Uke the tortoise, Bruce has never lost sight of his goal of becoming a veterinarian. His family is very proud of him. The kitten, hit by a car, is in shock, unable to move. The doctor assures the owner that we will do everything we can, and instructs me to care for the patient. “If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain,” I feed her, slowly, carefully coaxing her with my voice, offering her the warmth of my touch. Miserable, filthy, and afflicted, she cries. I bathe her, gently softly m assaging her wounds clean, cuddling her in terrycloth. From beneath the towel, the face of a new kitten peeks out. Medicine and a high calorie diet gradually bring her to better health. Still I care for her, encouraging her to walk, to find her dish, to eat, encouraging her to respond to m y voice and m y touch. M y voice means nourishment. M y touch m eans healing. She knows me; she knows m y love. “Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again,” She is healed, the owner has come, and they return home, happy to have one another. She was mine for a time. She knows me, and m y love. I am a part of her life. 1made a difference. “I shall not live in vain.” 137 TakeaLookatNewJersey Make a good living and practice high quality medicine in a great location.
