August 2001 Postseason 2000-2001 Newsletter Wonien's Top_ Moments (l-r) Liz Paddock '03, Lena Mathews '02, Meredith Freimer '01, Kinsy Miller '04 1Women's team undefeated in the outdoor season. Heading into the Heps, the women easily won both the Long Beach Collegiate Classic and UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational. After defeating Oxford and Cambridge at the Penn Invite, the women demolished Penn 93-52 at the annual dual meet in Ithaca. 2 A great freshman class contributes in every event group; 15 qualify for USATF Junior Nationals. Freshman school records seemed to be everywhere: 60 hurdles, 100 hurdles, pentathlon, DMR, 4X800 and with 15 freshmen qualifying for the USATF meet in six different events the future for Cornell looks very bright indeed! 3 Captain Karen Chastain '01 shines and ends her career a champion. The threetime Heps discus champion ended her career in great fashion, as she now is listed in the Cornell record books in the top-five in every throwing event. The outdoor ECAC discus champion, Karen was a Heps scorer in every throwing event indoors and outdoors except for the javelin. She graduated with an unprecedented 400+ points scored for the team during her career! 4 Jamie Reed '01 impresses in the pole vault. With an outstanding senior year, Reed set school records indoors and outdoors, was All-East at the ECAC championships, was runner-up at the indoor Heps and went out as an Ivy League champion with her Heps victory at Princeton. (l-r) Head coach Lou Duesing, All-American Danielle Brown '01, and head coach Nathan Taylor 5 Danielle Brown '01 earns second at the Heps and qualifies for the NCAA meet in the triple jump. In a superb ending to one of the greatest jumping careers in Cornell history, Danielle Brown battled four-time league champion (and Hungarian Olympian) Dora Gyorrfy in a thrilling triple jump at the outdoor Heps to finish a close second. In the process, Danielle raised her own school record to 42-6 3/4 and qualified for the NCAAs where she exceeded pre-meet form charts to place fifteenth and earn All-America honors. Merili Mosley '04 and Caitlin Ramsey '03 6 Women finish fourth indoors and outdoors at the Heps. Relying on every event group, the Red turned in great performances both indoors and outdoors in one of the most competitive leagues in the history of the women's Heps. Cornell's impressive total of 105 points outdoors was the most ever in the history of the league for a fourth-place team and put the Big Red closer to first-place Brown than to fifth-place Dartmouth. 7 Relays shine indoors and outdoors. A victory by the distance medley relay of Lena Mathews '02, Hannah Garrity '04, Meredith Freimer'01 and Kim Chatman '01 at the Sea Ray Relays marked the third straight year Cornell has claimed a championship at that prestigious meet. School freshman records were set in the 4X800 (in a time at the indoor ECAC that would have won the indoor Heps, which a different Cornell team had already accomplished the week before!) and the DMR (where Cornell finished an impressive 11th in the Championship of America at Penn Relays). Also at the Penn Relays, the 4X800 of Chatman, Freimer, Ann Hansgate '04, and Mathews set a school outdoor record in an outstanding time of 8:43.18, the seventhbest time in the nation, the 11th straight year the Cornell women's 4X800 has been nationally ranked and the fourth straight year in the top 10! The 4X800 added the outdoor Heps title to its indoor trophy case and also finished second (after leading at each exchange) at the outdoor ECACs for the second time in three years. The 4X400 of Caitlin Ramsey'03, Garrity, Anne Marie McMillan '02 and Katy Jay '03 upset all form charts in running the No. 2 time in school history (3:45.95) en route to a sixthplace showing at ECACs. Not to be outdone, the 4X100 of Ramsey, Brown, Merili Mosley '04 and Jay lowered the Cornell record by over a second to 46.84 at the ECAC meet. 8 Katy Jay emerges as one of the most versatile sprinters in the Heps. Sophomore sprint sensation Katy Jay earned three runner-up finishes at the Heps this year (60 and 200 indoors and 400 outdoors) before demolishing the field through the turn to win the outdoor Heps in the 200 in a school record 24.26. In addition to setting school records (some of the oldest on record for the women) in the 55, 60, 200 indoors and 100 and 200 outdoors and running the second-best time in the 400 in Cornell history, Jay also ran gutsy anchor legs for the 4X100 and 4X400 relays. 9 The Big Red women place sixth at the ECAC championships, the highest Cornell finish ever! Scoring 37 points (after a solid 14 in 2000), Cornell relied on every event group to finish as the top Heps program at the Eastern championships, behind only four Big East and one ACC school. Scoring came in bunches throughout the weekend, led by a victory from Chastain in the discus, a runner-up performances by the 4X800, a third place by Brown in the triple jump and scoring performances by the 4X400, Sonya Negriff '01 and Reed in the pole vault, Sarah Herskee '03 in the discus and Mosley in the 100 hurdles. After finishing fourth to start the indoor season at Penn State, Cornell crushed the competition at the Jan. 27 Six-Way Invitational at Barton Hall and defeated Ivy rivals Harvard and Brown in Cambridge, Mass. Big team wins followed at both the Long Beach Collegiate Classic and the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational. The lone blemish on this outstanding record was a tough home loss to Penn, in a meet that wasn't decided until the 4X400, which itself was an extremely close race to conclude the meet. Matt Murnan '01 races to second at the outdoor Heps in the 400 hurdles. Bringing the crowd to its feet with a stunning late-race surge, Matt Murnan ran a PR 52.82 to grab valuable points for Cornell and upset pre-race form charts in a huge way! 3 Pole vaulting exploits of Scott Lundy '02 and Travis Offner '04. At various points during the indoor and outdoor seasons, both Scott Lundy and Travis Offner have held the school pole vault record with Offner shattering the indoor and outdoor freshman records. Both vaulted 16-6 at UC Irvine and came through with big performances at both Heps, with Lundy taking second indoors and outdoors and Offner fourth indoors and third outdoors. 4 Pete Ippel clears 7 feet in the high jump. In an inspired effort at the Penn dual in Ithaca, captain Pete Ippel'01 cleared 7-0 1/2 to establish a Cornell standard in the high jump. Ippel also scored valuable points at big meets all year for Cornell, finished third at the indoor Heps and fifth at the indoor and outdoor IC4As. 5 Freshman Tyler Kaune wins a Heps championship in the long jump and is runner-up in the triple jump. Heralding a great future, Tyler Kaune '04 won the long jump on the first day of competition at the outdoor Heps and was a strong second in the triple jump on Sunday, indicating the Cornell jumps group will continue to be among the league's best. 6 Men's DMRis indoorIC4A runner-up in an NCAA qualifying time. Beaten only by heavily favored Georgetown, the Big Red foursome of Geoff Van Fleet'02, Murnan '01, Chris Ondrak '02 and Colin Moore '01 gave the Hoyas all they could handle en route to running 9:42.58, a time that equaled the old IC4A meet record and which was a provisional NCAA qualifying mark and school record. 7 Men's team top 10 at the indoor IC4As. The Big Red finished 10th at the indoor championships in Boston, scoring 22 points, the highest total and finishing place in fifteen years! 8The emergence of Max King '02, steeplechase champion. Max King '02 won both Heps and IC4A 3K steeplechase and qualified for the NCAA championships with a school record 8:45.84. In both cases, King ran confi- dently from the front and strung out competitive fields before clinching his victories with impressive last laps. At the NCAAs, Max ran a solid race to finish 13th and only missed the final by one spot. 9 Men's team third at the outdoor Heps! In an inspired team effort, with scoring efforts from every event group, the men scored 95 points, the highest finish by the Big Red since 1986. Cornell's indoor Heps fifth-place finish with 68 points was also the best showing since 1986! In an exciting indication of great things to come, Cornell only graduates 22 of these points from the outdoor meet and of the 21 freshman scorers in the league, 10 were from Cornell!
