VISION 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS LEADERSHIP RESEARCH & INSIGHTS KEYNOTE WEBINARS EVENTS BECOME A MEMBER 4 Academic Director & Georges C. and Marian St. Laurent Professor in Applied Business Management LINDA CANINA Dear Members, Partners, and Supporters, As we reflect on FY 23-24, I am proud to share our impact at the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR). This year, we continued publishing impactful case studies and research-backed insights on sustainability, leadership, hotel real estate, finance, and brand strategy, working toward our mission to empower and equip hospitality industry leaders with the essential knowledge and tools to tackle their most critical business challenges. We produced 18 research briefs, reports, indices, roundtable highlights, and case studies this year. Notably, we published the 10th edition of the Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index in partnership with Greenview. This annual study tracks emissions, water, and energy usage of more than 20,000 hotels worldwide, helping these hotels meet their sustainability goals. Next year, food waste, a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, will also be tracked. The CHR also hosted six successful roundtables and webinars, which are crucial for stimulating research. Topics ranged from short-term rentals to sustainability to hospitality tech innovations. At our signature Research Summit event, we brought together scholars, practitioners, and students to discuss putting cutting-edge research findings into practice. Topics included ESG and firm valuation, chain affiliation’s effect on HR investments, branded hotels’ impact on cash-flow risk, gig workers, using psychology to increase guest loyalty, and personalization through AI. In the spirit of collaboration and maximizing our impact, speakers from across the SC Johson College of Business were joined by industry experts from hotels, data providers, consulting firms, and tech platforms. We expanded our faculty network, engaging 34 faculty members through our publications, keynote webinars, events, and grants. Thanks to the Stanley Sun Faculty Global Research Fund, we awarded research grants to professors Aaron Adalja and Peng Liu. Adalja’s study will examine how sustainability attributes affect consumer demand in online hotel bookings, and Liu’s study seeks to understand whether there’s a connection between housing prices and urban amenities. Professor Young-Hoon Park, who was part of the 2022 cohort, recently published his study on the impact of subscription programs, while other past awardees continue their research. The CHR had an impactful year. We thank you for your invaluable support, whether through monetary gifts, data donations, or other means, which has enabled us to strengthen our position as the global hub of hospitality research. Looking forward, we are excited to support a cohort of students launching the Hospitality Research Club, continue to collaborate with our advisory board to identify critical research topics, and host more thought leadership events across the globe. Additionally, we will focus on upgrading our publication platform to provide an enhanced user experience and analytic tools that will enable us to track readership and engagement better. With a more streamlined, organized, and user-friendly publication platform, the CHR will be able to attract and support more readers and provide easier access to critical research findings that practitioners can apply in day-to-day operations and inform industry best practices, strategic decision-making, and operational improvements. We are incredibly grateful for your continued partnership and look forward to achieving even greater heights together in the year ahead.
