Description

Dr. Richard A. Baer, Jr. is professor emeritus of environ­mental ethics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Syracuse University (A.B., 1953). He attended Princeton Seminary (B.D., 1957) and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1965). From 1966 to 1973 he was associated with Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where teaching in his doctoral field of New Testament led to a growing interest in environmental ethics. He has published widely in the field of religion and the environment and on the subject of values and education. In the fall of 1974 Dr. Baer came to Cornell University to start an environmental ethics program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The program was housed in the Department of Natural Resources. The core undergraduate course in the program, designed for juniors and seniors, but also open to graduate students, was Natural Resources 407: "Religion, Ethics, and the Environment". This video was recorded at Dr. Baer’s retirement reception in August 2004.
