Hansen Type I Intervertebral Disc Disease in a 2-year-old Dachshund

Other Titles

Abstract

Hansen Type I Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common cause of myelopathy in young chondrodystrophic breed dogs. Prompt clinical diagnosis is important to achieve the best possible outcome, especially if surgical treatment is elected. In this case, the patient presented for acute, progressive paraparesis of 24 hours duration, which progressed to paraplegia, and was neurolocalized to a T3-L3 myelopathy. Computed tomography scan showed a mineralized disc compressing the spinal cord at the Ll-L2 disc space, primarily right-sided, and presumptive hemorrhage extending to Tl 3, confirming the diagnosis of Type I IVDD. A right-sided hemilaminectomy from T13-L2 was done, and the extruded disc material and hematoma were removed. The patient was hospitalized for four days post-operatively with no complications. At his four-week recheck appointment, the patient had an ambulatory paraparesis with spinal ataxia. This case report will discuss presentation, neurolocalization, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment in a dog with Type I IVDD.
