Polydactyly in a Thoroughbred colt

Other Titles

Abstract

Polydactyly is an uncommon anomaly in the horse. There have been numerous reports in the literatur concerning this condition, but no long-term studies following surgical correction. In this seminar, a case seen in private practice will be presented which was evaluated intermittently over a one year period following surgical removal of the supernumerary digit. The bay colt was foaled on a large Thoroughbred breeding farm (200 mares) with no known history of anomalies. Radiographci examinations both prior to surgical correction and in periodic post-surgical evaluations will be discussed. Prognosis will be discussed with regard to this case and selected other surgical or nonsurgical digit malformations.
