dc.description.abstract[Excerpt] The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) conducted a pilot study to learn more about the case circumstances and worker characteristics for occupational injury and illness cases that resulted in days of job transfer or work restriction for workers in six private industry subsectors in 2012. This is the second year for which these data are available. Rather than design and conduct an entirely separate survey, BLS integrated the pilot study with the existing BLS Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), an annual survey of over 250,000 establishments. In the normal Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, establishments are asked to provide detailed information about injuries and illnesses that led to days away from work. For the pilot study, establishments in the six selected private industry subsectors (according to the North American Industry Classification System, 2007) were asked to provide details for injuries and illnesses that led only to job transfer or restricted work in addition to the normally collected information on days-away-from-work cases. This information includes details about the type of event or exposure leading to the injury or illness, the type of injury or illness, the part of body affected, and the type of equipment or substance related to the event or exposure and various characteristics of the injured or ill worker.
