Sustainable design takes into account environmental, economic, and social impacts throughout a building’s life cycle. Where the first two are generally well-defined and understood, the social sphere of sustainable design is less so. This is evident in the implementation of smart building dashboards which display building performance levels. Such building technology is intended for stakeholders to track and reduce energy usage to improve economic and environmental outcomes. However, research has shown that energy performance in many of today's most sustainably designed smart buildings is much poorer than anticipated, once they are in use. This is because buildings and their systems are often designed with little attention given to the impacts on their end-users. By merging design strategies, psychology theories, and systems engineering concepts, this research aims to present a prescriptive modelling framework through which an integrated, smart building energy dashboard system can be effectively designed – allowing for the meaningful engagement of all stakeholders.
