An eight-year-old male castrated German shepherd dog presented to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals Dermatology service for evaluation of non-resolving skin lesions, skin infection, and pruritus of approximately two years duration. The lesions initially presented two years earlier as crusts in the inguinal region. The lesions and pruritus progressively worsened. The referring veterinarian prescribed various treatments including medicated shampoos, oclacitinib, and antimicrobials. Although pruritus was moderately decreased, lesions did not improve while on these treatments. Antimicrobials were discontinued due to severe diarrhea. On presentation, dermatologic abnormalities included multifocal ulcerative and erythematous lesions on the caudoventral abdomen, flanks, rostral muzzle, lip folds, tongue, and interdigital areas. On impression cytology, there were degenerate neutrophils and intracellular bacteria, suggesting a secondary bacterial folliculitis. Skin samples were taken from the inguinal region for histopathology and results were consistent with Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus (CLE). This report will describe the pathogenesis of CLE as well as differential diagnoses, pertinent diagnostics, and treatment options for this condition.en_US
