| dc.description.abstract | A 4-month-old, intact male, English bulldog was presented to the Dental and Oral Surgery Service of the Cornell University Hospital for Animals for evaluation of a congenital cleft palate. A conscious oral examination confirmed the presence of a complete cleft of the secondary palate. A computed tomographic scan of the skull was perfonned to assess the craniomaxillofacial abnormalities and to aid in surgical planning. A diagnosis of a complete cleft of the secondary palate with secondmĀ·y chronic rhinitis was established. The hard palate defect was corrected using an overlapping flap technique; the soft palate was reconstructed by apposition at the cleft margin. Surgery was performed without complication and the patient recovered from anesthesia uneventfully. This case study will discuss the embryological formation of the palate, pertinent surgical anatomy, details of the overlapping flap technique, and postoperative considerations. | en_US |
