Stertorous Breathing in an 11 -Year-Old Female Spayed Dog

| dc.description.abstract | An 11-year-old female spayed Labrador Retriever mix was presented to Cornell’s Small Animal Internal Medicine Service with a two-week history of difficulty breathing that was worse at night, sneezing approximately 4-5 times daily for 1 month, and recent right-sided otitis externa with head shaking. On presentation, the dog demonstrated stertorous breathing with the noise dissipating when her mouth was open. Physical exam revealed normal and symmetrical airflow through both nostrils, stiff right horizontal ear canal, erythematous right vertical ear canal, prominent right mandibular lymph node, and reactivity upon opening her mouth. Complete blood count, serum biochemical profile, and urinalysis were within normal limits. Sedated oral exam revealed mild right tonsillar enlargement. Computed axial tomography of the head and thorax revealed a well circumscribed mineralized mass (4.2 x 2.6 x 2.5 cm) obstructing the mid-caudal portion of the right nasopharynx and extending caudally into the left nasopharynx. The mass appeared to be in close proximity to the right temporomandibular joint, and potentially blocked the right auditory tube leading to fluid accumulation in the right tympanic bulla. Although the location of the mass offered an explanation for the dog’s clinical signs, the mass was deemed to be non-resectable. Surgical biopsy of the mass was performed to gain information regarding tumor type. Two core biopsies were taken from the bony mass, and the right mandibular lymph node was resected. Results of histopathology confirmed multilobular osteochondrosarcoma and reactive lymph node. Palliative radiation was offered for management. | en_US |
