dc.description.abstractA search for Soft Unclusted Energy Patterns (SUEPs) is presented. Motivated by hidden valley models with a dark QCD sector and a large ’t-Hooft coupling, SUEP events are characterized by a final state with a high multiplicity of low momentum, diffusely distributed, charged particles. Data from the CMS experiment using a nontraditional "scouting" triggering paradigm are used to select signal events allowing for more data to be utilized when compared to the traditional offline triggering method. The resulting final state particles recoil against initial state radiation and are thus boosted into a large radius jet with a high track multiplicity, spherically distributed in its own frame of reference. The analysis utilizes these two handles in order to separate the signal from a large QCD multijet background. The search uses proton-proton collisions recorded at \sqrt(s) = 13 TeV during 2016-2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 125.81 fb−1. This is the first dedicated search forthe SUEP signal and provides a unique insight into physics beyond the Standard Model.en_US
