dc.description.abstractOn May 29, 1983, Governor Mário Carrascalão met with the leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Frente Revolucionária de Timor-Leste Independente, abbreviated Fretilin), José Alexandre “Kay Rala Xanana” Gusmão. Their private discussion about the ceasefire, national unity, and the future of East Timor was recorded and translated into Indonesian. “A Tape Recorder and a Wink?” provides an English-language translation of the Indonesian-language transcript of the discussion in Portuguese between Governor Carrascalão and Xanana Gusmão. The transcript is preceded by a short historical introduction and analysis by Douglas Kammen.
