Abstract
Discusses the nature of the evidence available for the study of the effects of warfare on civilian populations including textual, art historical and archaeological and their inherent limitations. Such evidence includes destruction of settlements; civilian deaths as a result of famine, disease and massacres; treatment of prisoners, rape; the Herem ("ban"), treatment of the dead; refugees, exile/deportation; benefits that incurred to civilians as a result of a successful war.
