Abstract
This paper examines how preservation professionals could approach international significance statements of the architectural work of Louis I. Kahn, addressing a larger audience apart from the field of architecture and how this approach can encourage transboundary nominations of such properties to the World Heritage List. To address these questions, the paper analyzes the meaning of international significance in the context of world heritage and modern buildings to present a way forward for assessing the global significance of Kahn’s buildings. This is elaborated by presenting a background and overview of the evolution of Kahn’s work and analyzing two projects in South Asia (IIM-A and National Assembly Complex, Dhaka) as case studies for assessing the international significance by reflecting on the contributions of other collaborators on these projects with Louis Kahn. This study encourages the inscription of modern cultural heritage properties that are the result of shared values and international partnerships, which have the potential in representing historic collaborations between state parties and diversify their representation at the global level to support transboundary nominations.
