"We wanted to democratize the university" The history of Amanda Labarca's university extension project

Other Titles

Abstract

Amanda Labarca (1886-1975) was an educator, feminist, and the first woman to hold a university professor position in Chile in 1922. Labarca dedicated her life to practicing, theorizing, and promoting university extension, which is now considered the third mission of Latin American universities. In this thesis, I reconstructed her university extension work at Universidad de Chile in three moments: 1907-1913, 1935-1936, and 1949-1953. I identified four main lessons from her experience: she was a pioneer and innovator of university extension in Latin America; her university extension project was part of a broader political project of democratization of society and feminism; her extension work was part of a global dialogue with feminists and extension experiences in the US; her case shows how university extension was, and still is, a concept in dispute that help us rethink and reimagine university’s role in society.
