Abstract
This bulletin was produced to raise awareness of building design techniques, early warning devices, and automatic sprinkler systems that reduce the risk of major damage by a fire. It also discusses fire extinguishers and ways to improve the ability of fire departments to suppress fires. The last section of the bulletin describes installations of early warning devices and automatic sprinklers in horse, poultry, dairy, and swine demonstration facilities. The bulletin is written for owners of livestock buildings, rural insurance agents, agricultural builders and consultants, bankers and loan officers, and extension agents in livestock production areas. Owners, managers, and builders of livestock buildings should have a thorough know ledge of fire control technology. Otherwise, poor decisions may be made, resulting in construction practices that greatly increase fire loss potential, including use of inappropriate fire-resistive construction, fire detection equipment, and suppression systems.
