In order to reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs, and thereby reduce euthanasia in shelters, veterinarians in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics have developed many techniques to safely increase the efficiency of their surgeries. One surgical technique that is commonly used for feline ovariohysterectomies in these clinics is the ovarian pedicle tie. The procedure is analogous to self-ligature of the spermatic cord for feline castration. It is primarily used to reduce surgical and anesthetic time for the patient. This paper will explain and illustrate how the ovarian pedicle tie is performed. The advantages and disadvantages of the technique will be discussed, as well as the reasons why it can be used in all cats, but cannot be used in dogs.en_US
