dc.description.abstractSolutions to the database consistency problem in distributed databases are developed. It is shown how any solution to the consistency problem for a centralized database system that involves locking can be adapted for use in distributed systems. This is done, constructively, in two steps. First, it is shown how locking can be implemented in terms of semaphores. Then, a semaphore implementation that is suitable for use in distributed systems is developed.en_US
