dc.description.abstractSince March 2020, most universities in the United States cancelled in-person classes, meetings and suspended travel in order to slow down the spread of COVID-19. Faculty members were given very short notice in the middle of the Spring semester to change from in-person instruction to online teaching and research activities. The objective of this research is to survey transportation faulty members on the changes in teaching and research practices during the Spring semester of 2020, to document and share the experiences and challenges. The proposed tasks are: • Task 1: Design, test and refine an online survey instrument in QuestionPro, and apply for Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. • Task 2: Build an email list of transportation faculty in the United States based on the public information posted at university websites. • Task 3: Implement the survey by sending email invitations to the faculty list compiled in Task 2. • Task 4: Analysis of the survey responses. • Task 5. Report the findings in a TRB paper and a project report. Outputs: The expected outputs of this research are the survey instrument, survey results, a TRB paper and a project report. Outcome: The findings will enable faculty to learn from the experience of colleagues in other institutions and improve their teaching and research practices to better meet the challenges. Impacts: The shared information could potentially impact faculty in universities across the country in making transportation engineering education more accessible and lessening the negative impacts of COVID-19 on transportation research. The TRB paper will be a valuable resource for the university administrators to device policies to prepare for future pandemics.en_US
