Abstract

The declaration of war by the United States brought letters from individuals seeking recommendations for political or military appointment. During this period White received several letters from Americans of German descent who were loyal to America and heartbroken by the hatred that had developed in the United States toward all things German. White's answer to one on April 17th was circulated privately, although he declined to have it published. There is a heavy volume of trustee correspondence, and there are many letters from students and friends from his early years.
