Joannes Volpato (1733-1803)
Kroch Library - RMC - Archives Uncataloged -- Description of Image: Pio Sexto Pont Max is an engraving in one color- black on cream paper. The print depicts a scene framed by a large arch that stretches the width of the print. Within the arch, a group of steps lead up to an altar where a man kneels beside it and looks up into a dome that seems to have an oculus since light reflects off of the dome’s side. Beyond the altar scene, a series of arches lead the eye back to a semicircular opening that reveals a patch of sky. All of the subsequent arches also possess light that comes from above, and, thus, also seem to possess oculi. In the foreground of the print, flanking the altar scene are two groups of people. On the left side, a motley group of people is composed in a triangular composition that leads the viewer to the group on the right side of the print. If the members of the motley group are not pointing their bodies to the right side of the print, their eyes are, which further directs the viewer in this direction. On the right side of the print, a soldier atop a horse is positioned to stomp on another soldier laying directly beneath them. On one side of the soldiers are angels who fly towards the soldiers while on the other side is a small group of people who all possess agonizing expressions.
