Abstract
The description of the equipment of the Philistine champion, Goliath of Gath, in 1 Samuel 17:4-7 matches well with what is known about both chariot warriors and Sea Peoples/Philistines of the Late Bronze Age to Iron Age I. This includes his armor, helmet, greaves, javelin, two swords and his shield bearer. The description does not at all demand a late Iron Age date for the origin of the text.
