PLANNING THE PLANTING: URBAN FORESTRY FOR HOUSING, DEVELOPMENT, AND HEALTH
This dissertation examines the relationships between urban forestry and housing, economic development, and public health. The first paper analyzes the impacts of street trees on the single-family housing market in Seattle from 2010 to 2020. It examines the impacts of trees across different income-level neighborhoods using hedonic methods and spatial models. It concludes that street trees are valued more in lower-income areas and recommends community-based interventions in the tree-planting process to ensure environmental justice. The second paper reviews the neighborhood-level temporal changes of green coverage in ten metropolitan areas in the US from 2001 to 2019. It concludes the temporal and spatial patterns based on the time-series K-means clustering, and further explores the relationship between the three patterns and socioeconomic/built environment factors. It concludes that there is significant loss in urban and rural transition areas. Results also indicate that urban sprawl with green loss may lead to further social equity issues. The third paper examines the relationship between neighborhood-level mobility-based green exposure and cardiovascular health outcomes in 20 metropolitan areas in the US at the census tract level, using mobile phone location data to track tree canopy exposure in home and destination neighborhoods. The study found that a larger difference in canopy exposure between destination neighborhoods and home neighborhoods, particularly during weekends, is positively correlated with cardiovascular health, providing new insights into the relationship between green exposure and cardiovascular health for forestry initiatives aimed at promoting human health. Overall, this dissertation offers important insights into the relationships between urban forestry and human well-being and equity. The three papers cover different aspects of urban forestry, from individual tree level to neighborhood level, and from housing, socioeconomic factors to human mobility and health. It provides policy implications for promoting environmental justice and health through urban forestry initiatives.
