A 2-month-old, male castrated, Vietnamese potbellied pig was presented to the Cornell University Farm Animal Hospital with a 5 hour history of extensive traumatic injury sustained following a dog attack. A pre-operative CT scan of the head revealed a fracture of the right coronoid process, the right condylar process and symphysis of the mandible; multiple maxillary fractures were evident as well. Surgical management included open reduction and rigid internal fixation of the condylar fracture, intraoral splinting of the symphyseal fracture and reconstruction of the tongue and lip. A post-operative CT revealed excellent reduction of the condylar and symphyseal fractures. This case study will focus on surgical techniques for mandibular fracture repair and soft tissue reconstruction in pediatric patients and management of post-operative complications.
