A Comparative Study of Irtysh Grand Canyon and Yosemite Valley: Management, Transportation, Tourism Services, and Environmental Protection in National Park Development
This paper conducts a comparative analysis of the Irtysh Grand Canyon in Keketuohai National Geopark, China, and Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, USA. Based on field studies and interviews, this study finds that the Irtysh Grand Canyon still has significant room for improvement in management, transportation services, environmental conservation, tourism development, and local ethnic minority participation in park decision-making. Some pressing issues include unreliable shuttle bus services, road conflicts during local herders’ seasonal migration, limited participatory tourism activities, and the lack of an ecological monitoring system to track the impacts of visitor activities. In contrast, Yosemite Valley demonstrates more mature park management, visitor services, and environmental monitoring systems, although it is also limited in Indigenous community participation. The findings of this study aim to draw on Yosemite Valley’s experience to provide recommendations for the future development of the Irtysh Grand Canyon as a national park.
