VIRTUAL REALITY PERSPECTIVE TAKING AND PROSOCIAL USER BEHAVIORS: DISCOVERING ROLE OF TECHNOLOGICAL AFFORDANCES IN USER EXPERIENCE
This thesis presents a comprehensive exploration of the role of affordances within virtual reality perspective-taking environments and their influence on prosocial user behaviors. It delves into the intricate interplay of these affordances and how they collectively shape prosocial user responses. The first chapter encompassed screening of 7000+ articles to conduct a systematic literature review, focusing on the extensive body of research in the realm of virtual reality perspective-taking, with a particular emphasis on the role of affordances that can potentially impact prosocial thought-action tendencies. The second chapter reports the experimental findings derived from a designed study where participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (High-Affordance vs. Low-Affordance), in a pre-posttest with control design. All participants engaged in three perspective-taking tasks employing a head-mounted display (HMD) in both the experimental and control conditions. The analysis reveals notable effects of perspective-taking on multiple prosocial outcomes (e.g., empathy, prosocial attitudes, donation amount) although the superiority of High-Affordance condition remains inconclusive for certain prosocial behaviors. This study introduces a novel dimension by incorporating HMD usage in both experimental and control conditions, shedding light on the possibility that the observed prosocial behaviors in previous literature might be attributed to the novelty of HMD usage and/or highly exaggerated treatment conditions. The study deviates slightly from prior literature in VRPT research and concludes by highlighting the study's limitations, discussing its implications, and suggesting avenues for future research.
